Breathing is our most important behavior, yet it is always effortlessly cycling. The subconscious rhythm is created by a brainstem pacemaker, but despite its critical need, it can be volitionally shut off in an instant or rapidly co-opted to speak or laugh. Breathing can control our emotions, like the calming effect of slow breathing, and the urgency to breathe can over-ride all our thought. We use state-of-the-art neurophysiology and sophisticated mouse genetics to study all aspects of breathing. See more about our research.
